Canadian regulators approved the composite board used in a panel designed to reduce the thickness of composite panels on the new Google Honeycomb smartphone.
The new board has been approved as “a safe and effective substitute for metal panels in certain situations.”
The approval follows a recent study by the Canadian Institute for Sustainable and Renewable Energy (CISARE) and the University of Waterloo, which found that a single-use aluminum composite board was safe and efficient.
The CISARE and the UW study found that using aluminum in combination with a metal component was a “low-risk, low-cost, high-reward alternative to metal panels.”
“There is no reason to use aluminium as the component on the board,” CISAERIE said in a statement.
The boards are made of a polycarbonate material that contains aluminum and a plastic composite core.
The composite board uses a mixture of aluminum and titanium, which are both renewable sources of energy.
Aluminum has a relatively low thermal conductivity compared to other composite materials.
The technology could be used to make composite components that can absorb more heat, such as water or solar panels.
“It is very exciting to see a Canadian regulator supporting the use of a composite board in a smartphone with such high performance,” said David Ting, chief operating officer of CISAERE.
“This is a significant milestone in the composite-manufacturing process and the new technology could have an impact on many industries, from aerospace to medical devices.”
The composite boards have a high electrical conductivity and can withstand up to 15 percent heat, according to CISAERT.

“We need to design our product to be used in all environments, and this is a great opportunity for us to be ahead of the curve in the technology field.”
Google’s Honeycomb panel is being used on the company’s upcoming Pixel, the Google Pixel XL, the Pixel XL XL, and the Pixel C. Google has already introduced the company will soon unveil its next smartphone, the Nexus 6P.
